Less Archery, More Football: 10 Questions for Preseason Camp

Interrupting our Alison Williamson coverage, the Tribune previewed ASU football camp in 10 easily-digestible chunks. What are the biggest questions hounding and the gang as they prepare for NAU?

(Hint: The image below has led to many a sleepless night ’round these parts.)

Rudy Carpenter planted :(

This time of year is fraught with questions. Which “lucky” gold shirt will we wear to games this year? When will the Sexy Safeway resume selling balls?

The East Valley Tribune has compiled this list of 10 questions (and guesses as to answers) facing the Sun Devils as they prepare for the opener against NAU.

  • What will be the impact of the indoor practice facility?
  • Are the pass-protection problems fixed?
  • How will the running backs shake out?
  • Is one ball enough for all the receivers?
  • Who wants to be a starting tight end?
  • Can ASU develop a menacing front four?
  • Who will answer the call at cornerback?
  • Who will punt?
  • Which players — old and new — will emerge?
  • Will there be academic issues?

Which question costs you the most sleep these days? We guess we want to know which running back will take the lead between , and , but we feel like “All of the Above” would be a fine option. And we’re definitely more than a little concerned about the corner position opposite .

The big question in our minds though is the pass protection. Personally, we get the willies thinking about the 55 sacks the Sun Devils gave up last year — and we’re sure Rudy Carpenter’s with us on that.

Starting tackles and have never taken college snaps on the offensive line before, and center is replacing a second-round NFL draft pick . Uh, when is that Georgia game again?

So which question haunts you? Let us know what you’re most concerned with in the comments below.

  1. As a major financial supporter of the Sexy Safeway (10 years shopping there), I was sad to see yesterday that the store no longer sells Beer Pong balls. The store does have something similar, referred to as “Ping Pong” balls. They are positioned eerily close to the liquor section.

    Viva Sexy Safeway!

  2. Ah yes, a trip to Sexy Safeway tonight revealed that there is no longer a beer pong display. How disappointing. The trip also revealed that it not quite yet the most wonderful time of the year.

Then again, with the questions around our offensive line, I’m not sure the Sun Devils are ready for the most wonderful time of the year.

(How’d you feel about that transition?)

  3. I second the motion that pass protection is my biggest concern, especially with an inexperienced line, but how much is that responsibility really is on the o-line? Is Rudy a step slow with the ball, or perhaps our receivers aren’t getting decent separation (Shaun McDonald, how we yearn for thee…)? We all hammered the offensive line last year, and rightfully so because 55 sacks is disgusting, but a sack allowed is an event that has a lot of people’s fingerprints on it.

Question 11: With a name like Jon Hargis, wasn’t he destined to be a huge lineman?

  4. I’m fillin’ the argument about the RBs failing to block and Rudy failing to ditch the ball. Fifty five sacks is not pretty, and it’s hard to pin on one unit. Though it sure is easy to pin it on the line!
