Sparky’s Lunchbox: My BCS Conference is Better than Your BCS Conference
Sports Illustrated ran an excellent (albeit long) analysis of the debate between BCS conferences. Who’s No. 1? Also, how’s that Zach Miller guy doing?

Les Miles thinks the SEC is the cat’s pajamas. Pete Carroll is pretty impressed by the Pac-10. And Jim Tressel has convinced himself that the Big 10 is still relevant.
None really offers compelling quantitative reasons for his belief. But Sports Illustrated has attempted to with an excellent (albeit long) analysis of the debate between BCS conferences – after you get past the first few hundred words explaining the mechanics of their formula that is.
Here’s what they discovered (Why 2003? Well, that’s when the ACC expanded. Duh!):
| 2003-08 | 1998-’03 | |
| 1. | SEC (40) | Big Ten (35) |
| 2. | Pac-10 (29) | SEC (31) |
| 3. | ACC (23) | Big 12 (25) |
| 4. | Big Ten (22) | Pac-10 (21) |
| 5. | Big 12 (19) | Big East (18) |
| 6. | Big East (16) | ACC (17) |
The article goes on to attempt to make sense of the shifts in conference strength over the last five years. Big money invested in SEC coaches. The lack of speed in the Midwest. USC’s rise in the West. All interesting stuff.

Oh, and according to the AP, Zach Miller is doing pretty well with the Raiders. The second-year pro caught 44 passes for 444 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie, but would’ve done more for his fantasy owners if not for those pesky blocking assignments.
