Sparky’s Lunchbox: A Bad Weekend for ASU’s Olympians
Jacquelyn Johnson and Trevell Quinley come up short in Beijing and 30 or so USC football players have some explaining to do to their girlfriends.

Eleven current and former Sun Devils are competing in the Beijing Olympics—and none is doing particularly well. This weekend was especially tough for two of our best medal hopefuls.
Jacquelyn Johnson pulled out of the heptathlon due to a hamstring injury and Trevell Quinley failed to advance to the final of the long jump. Quinley was understandably upset when he spoke with the Arizona Republic.
“They say the Olympics is not about winning, it’s about partaking. That’s bogus. I’m not here to spectate. I’m here to get a medal.”
So this will be the first Olympics since 1992 that an American Sun Devil has not won a gold medal in track. Maicel Malone (4×400 relay), Nick Hysong (pole vault) and Dwight Phillips (long jump) won in 1996, 2000 and 2004, respectively.
In happier news, about a quarter of USC’s football team has skin irritation in an area most men would rather not have irritated. According to the Los Angeles Times, “The condition seems to have spread by way of new compression shorts, or tights, worn under their football pants.”
At least it’s that and not taking sloppy seconds from Matt Leinart.
Could jock itch be the key to ASU’s Rose Bowl hopes?

We’re here to bring back a banner or something!
Yes, a banner or, say, a medal. It really is too bad about ASU’s Olympic contingent. We were on quite a run there for a while. Alack and alas, there’s always 2012. At least none of them are coming home with jock itch.
Many possible explanations for that amount of USC players getting jock itch, but it’s probably a little less head-scratching than when a bunch of Florida basketball players got mono at the same time.
Makes you wonder what they do in their spare time!
