Sparky’s Lunchbox: Looking Back at Jeff Quinney’s U.S. Amateur Win
We catch up with former Arizona State golfer Jeff Quinney eight years after his win in the U.S. Amateur, and former Sun Devil Terrell Suggs plans to catch up with teammates by springing for a night on the town.

With the U.S. Amateur in full swing, the Fayetteville Observer caught up with former Arizona State golfer Jeff Quinney. Hard to believe it’s been eight years since Quinney followed in the footsteps of former Sun Devils Phil Mickelson (1990) and Billy Mayfair (1987) by taking home the crown. He joined a list of winners that you may have heard of … three-time champion Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and a handful of other golf legends.
Quinney’s had an unremarkable professional career, but he’s made $3.6 million thus far and is 19th on the PGA money list this year. That equates to almost $2 million in 2008, and he hasn’t won a tournament. Quinney is 58th in the official World Golf Rankings, even though he hasn’t won an event since the 2004 Oregon Classic Nationwide Tour.
“It doesn’t happen overnight. I’m 29 years old now, and I was 21 when I won (the U.S. Amateur). It’s been eight years. That takes a serious and unwavering commitment to getting better every year. This takes time and patience. A lot of patience.”
Speaking of former Sun Devils, Terrell Suggs ended his 23-day holdout by reporting to Baltimore Ravens camp on Monday. The two-time pro-bowler will make a cool $8.5 million this year. When asked in this video if he’d be taking his teammates out to dinner to celebrate, Suggs informed the reporter that he’d instead be springing for a couple of party buses – as any self-respecting Sun Devil would.
Oh, and as Mike Jones predicted when we spoke with him a few weeks ago, senior safety Troy Nolan will be one of the football team’s two captains this season along with quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
(Sorry, no link with this one, unless you want to see the scantily-clad female golfer we stumbled across while looking for an image of Jeff Quinney.)
