Sparky’s Lunchbox: That Brett Wallace is Going Places

gets the call (no, not the big one), the Payson Roundup eulogizes , and we do some catching up with former ASU All-American .

Brett Wallace

Just a few months into his professional career, Arizona State slugger Brett Wallace was promoted to Double-A Springfield on Tuesday. Wallace, the 13th-overall pick of the St. Louis Cardinals, is hitting .327 with five homers and 25 RBIs. By completely skipping over High-A ball, Wallace is evoking memories (at least in St. Louis) of former fast riser J.D. Drew.

The promotion could be good news for Sun Devil fans wanting to get another look at Wallace. Nearly all Arizona Fall League players are from Double-A and Triple-A, because teams are allowed to send only one Single-A player. So the local yokels in us can’t help but wonder if a promotion for Wallace to Double-A foreshadows an appearance in the AFL. Roster announcements will probably happen later this month, so maybe we’ll get 40 more chance to see Wallace very soon.

Meanwhile, the Beaver County Times had a short feature catching up with ASU All-American defensive end Bob Kohrs. Kohrs spent five years with the Pittsburgh Steelers at the tail end of the Bradshaw-Harris-Lambert-Ham era petered out.

Undoubtedly still drowning their sorrows at Fargo’s, the Payson Roundup took what may have been the last practice at Camp Tontozona just as one might expect—hard. Quoth the Roundup: “The playing of Taps … would have signaled the death of the scenic high mountain retreat as a summer training camp for the Sun Devils.”

And you know what? We feel their pain.
