Sparky’s Lunchbox: All Rudy, All the Time

As promised, we deliver a bevy of Rudy Carpenter links so you can decide for yourself where to stand on the great debate. More Jake Plummer or more Ryan Kealy? You be the judge.

Rudy Carpenter

It’s all Rudy all the time here at Echo from the Buttes today, and for good reason. We think he’s pretty darn special. So special in fact, that we’re referring to him simply as Rudy as if he were a Brazilian beach volleyball star.

But not everyone’s feelin’ Rudy. So here’s a ton of links to help you decide. Rudy: Friend or foe?

In a recent Sports Illustrated feature, former Sun Devil Arash Markazi offered a pretty comprehensive play-by-play of Rudy’s troubles at ASU.

Scott Bordow of the East Valley Tribune analyzed the lack of respect Rudy receives from some Sun Devil fans. And, in the same issue of the Tribune, beat writer Dan Zeiger did a little unbiased assessing of Rudy’s legacy.

We can’t vouch for this audio, but apparently loathsome Fox Sports announcer Petros Papadakis interviewed Rudy on his Southern California radio show. We take no blame for annoyance stemming from his inability to not slurp USC.

And we’d be remiss if we didn’t offer this heart-warming photo diary of a young Sun Devil receiving Rudy’s hand-written response to his fan letter. (The very Sun Devil pictured with Rudy above.)

Now if that doesn’t bring back memories of growing up in the Valley and writing fan letters to Paul Justin (or, say, Kevin Johnson), we don’t know what will.

Remember, post your take on the Rudy debate in our previous post.
