Sparky’s Lunchbox: A Final Tune Up at Sun Devil Stadium

Arizona State held its final scrimmage of the preseason last night. Did Dennis Erickson like what he saw? Also, a former Sun Devil signs his first NFL contract.

OK, so there weren't that many people there.

The ASU football team returned to Sun Devil Stadium for its final preseason scrimmage last night, and all indications are things went pretty well. So well, in fact, that Dennis Erickson called it the team’s best offensive performance of the preseason.

The first-team offense looked crisp with Rudy Carpenter efficiently locating receivers and running backs Dimitri Nance and Keegan Herring both putting together some nice runs. It certainly helped that the offensive line held its own.

We missed him up at Camp T (except for that nice catch he made out of bounds in street clothes), but Mike Jones made up for lost time with a great goal line grab of a Rudy Carpenter pass for a 32-yard touchdown. Kyle Williams had a nifty 66-yard punt return for a score.

All in all, the Sun Devils looked pretty good. But don’t take our words for it. The pros from the East Valley Tribune and the Arizona Republic weighed in with their observations – likely on very tight deadline.

Anyway, we pulled out some of the key statistics from the scrimmage and posted them below. Did you take away any observations that we missed? If so, leave them in the comments.

And finally, Tyrice Thompson, a member of last year’s football team, signed a free agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts. We don’t have a link, because no one really wrote much about it. But trust us, it happened.

Be sure to check out our farewell to Camp Tontozona and our assessment of Rudy Carpenter’s legacy.
