Our assessment of the divisive Rudy Carpenter’s legacy.
Coming off a six-catch 162-yard performance in the season opener against NAU, Mike Jones was one of many topics discussed by Dennis Erickson and Rudy Carpenter during Monday’s game week press conference. Jones, who played quarterback in high school, has matured considerably in the last year under the guidance of wide receivers coach Eric Yarber.
Quoth Carpenter: “When Mike first got here he hadn’t played receiver, so I don’t think he really knew how to play the position and he didn’t know how to study to get better or even how to be coached to get better at that position. Ever since coach Yarber got here, Mike’s growth at that position has been substantial.”
Jones put together his big game just in time to be featured on the cover of this month’s Maroon and Gold Illustrated. The profile focuses on his love of sports – from spending his summer playing baseball with ASU and the Yankees to clowning around with Wichita State fans and flashing the Horns Down sign at Texas in the Holiday Bowl.
Here’s what else you’ll see when the issue hits your mailbox in the next week:
- Inside ASU Sports news section
- Q&A’s with football coordinators Rich Olson and Craig Bray
- Feature stories on safety Troy Nolan and the reinstatement of the wrestling and men’s swimming programs
- Coverage of Dennis Erickson’s defensive recruiting needs and Herb Sendek’s 2009 targets
- In The Pros features on Ryan Torain and Chez Reavie
- Where Are They Now? feature on Kevin Miniefield
And while we’re on our Mike Jones kick, we point you to today’s story in the Arizona Republic in which Jones insists that he does not need a track coach despite being caught from behind on two would-be touchdown runs.
