Former construction worker Pierre “the hammer” Singfield is poised to become the next Sun Devil walk-on success story. Oh, and ASU says Sparky is not going anywhere.

The walk-on is one of those special things about college football—like warm Saturday evenings in Sun Devil Stadium and Arizona fans chirping about how great their basketball team is.

Without a scholarship or a guaranteed roster spot, they show up on campus determined to prove that they deserve a place at the table among the Pac-10’s elite.

Over the last decade or so, we’ve seen our share of “Rudy”s transform from high school unknown to ASU star to NFL draftee. Chandler linebacker Adam Archuleta and Eloy lineman Levi Jones spring immediately to mind.

Well, it looks like Archie and Big Vi may soon have company. Junior college transfer Pierre Singfield won the starting cornerback job opposite Omar Bolden in the preseason and held up well Saturday against NAU. Now he should be close to winning a scholarship.

As pointed out today in the East Valley Tribune, that’s great news for a guy who didn’t play football last season while Pima Community College sorted through an administrative snafu.

To prepare to pay his way to Tempe, Singfield spent the summer working construction. As anyone who’s worked construction (or flipped a house) can tell you, it pretty much sucks. But there are perks.

“Getting out the big hammers, that was cool,” Singfield told the Trib.

We couldn’t agree more.

The depth chart battle between the 5-foot-11, 197-pound Singfield and Terell Carr should rage all season. But when Singfield lays the big hammer down on a Stanford receiver this weekend, we’ll be sure to take note.

It’ll be nice to say we knew him back in the day, when he was just a scrappy walk-on trying to earn his keep.

One other quick note, those of us who were worried that Sparky has received the kiss of death from Michael Crow can rest easy. Scott Bordow did some digging and determined that Sparky will not be sleeping with the fishes anytime soon.
