Herb Sendek missed out on Gilbert Highland phenom Matt Carlino a week or two ago. But he recovered nicely this weekend when he received a verbal commitment from Corey Hawkins (pictured above), the son of former NBA All-Star Hersey Hawkins who is unfortunately not related to short-shorts era Phoenix Suns great Connie Hawkins (pictured below).

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Hawkins averaged 22 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists per game against small school competition as a sophomore at Goodyear’s Estrella Foothills High. He drained 68 percent of his field goals including 37 percent from 3-point range. (Thank you Maxpreps for the photo and statistics.)
Hawkins is the first member of the Class of 2010. Our 2009 recruiting class includes Bay Area point guard Jared Cunningham and Minnesota shooting guard Trent Lockett. Both are ranked in the top 20 at their positions.

It’s really odd thinking about basketball during football season—unless your area code is 520. Anyway, the Hoops Report is counting down its top 50 teams, and the Devils were previewed surprisingly early. They have us ranked No. 26.
And finally, AP poll voter Glenn Guilbeau finally added ASU to his ballot, ranking us 18th after leaving us out of the rankings in both previous polls this season. And Craig James of CBS is still stubbornly clinging to his belief that Arizona is top 25 material. (Thank you Pollspeak.com.)
