The No. 2 Sun Devil women’s golf team got off to a strong start by winning the NCAA Fall Preview for the first time since 1994. and (pictured above) finished second and fourth, respectively, and finished ninth overall.

The NCAA Fall Preview is the second-biggest tournament of the year—right behind the actual national championship.

Osborn, a Californian and the only American-born golfer on the team, will play a key part in the Sun Devils’ run toward an NCAA championship. The other six members of the team hail from Spain, Mexico, Columbia, Italy and Sweden.

The team said it dedicated its victory to associate head coach who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer and followed the tournament on the Internet. She will not be traveling with the team in the fall.

Quoth seventh-year head coach Melissa Luellen: “Coach Kaye said it was fun to watch all the circles (birdies) appear on Golfstat. We dedicated this tournament to her. She is such an inspiration to all of us and we are really excited to have her come with us when we come back here in May.”

Bad Break for Soccer

The women’s soccer team took a big hit already after highly touted freshman forward tore her right ACL. Tinnin was a high school All-American and New Mexico Gatorade Player of the Year last year.

According to the East Valley Tribune, the loss came as a blow to coach Kevin Boyd who was impressed with her first (and only) game. Quoth Boyd: “We were watching her play and we’re going ‘Wow she’s going to be a good player for us this year.’”

Meanwhile, Sierra Cook had two goals and assist as ASU beat Weber State on Sunday and was named ASU’s female athlete of the week.
