Devils in MLB: The A’s Love ASU

Arizona State fans should do themselves a favor and stop by Phoenix Municipal Stadium next March. That’s because the Oakland Athletics seem to really be jonesing for former Sun Devils.

There were no fewer than five former Devils in the A’s minor league system as the season wound down this week. Here’s a quick look at how they did this year:

  • (AAA) — 45 games, .296, 8 doubles, 2 home runs
  • (AAA) — 117 games, .243, 29 doubles, 28 home runs
  • (A) — 126 games, .280, 24 doubles, 14 home runs
  • (A) — 40 games, .250, 8 doubles, 1 home run
  • (AA) — 12 games, .237, 3 doubles, 1 home run

Buck came through in the Pacific Coast League Championship game on Sunday, smacking a fifth-inning double and scoring a run in a 4-2 win for the Sacramento River Cats.

And then in last night’s Triple-A Championship Game – the last minor league game of the year until the Sun Devil-friendly Arizona Fall League commences – Conrad (pictured above) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. He also turned a fancy double play to end the seventh inning in a 4-1 win over the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees, who were probably cursed by having former Wildcat Shelly Duncan on their roster.

Myers was a player/coach this season, serving as both a catcher and a batting coach. He was done playing as of early May though and spent the rest of the season in the coaching capacity. It’s a decent bet he’s done as a player, so if you’re looking for Sun Devil autographs next spring, and you want one from Myers, you should look for the guy barking out orders, not one of the guys taking them.

But the point here is there aren’t that many Sun Devils playing pro ball actively. So the odds of having five in one organization are slim. Maybe the A’s front office likes what ’s doing in Tempe.

  1. Good take Brooks. That pitch is high.

  2. That’s kind of sad about Casey Myers. The guy hit like 40 home runs and 300 RBI at ASU, but I don’t think he ever got a crack at the big leagues. Maybe he should sue MLB too!

  3. Let’s not forget that the A’s drafted Ethier too….unfortunately they traded him to the f**king Dodgers for Milton Bradley
