Diamondbacks fans may want to avert their eyes, but the Los Angeles Times recently profiled red hot Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier. The story touches on the time ASU baseball coach Pat Murphy sent the Phoenix St. Mary’s grad packing to Chandler-Gilbert Community College because he wasn’t ready for Pac-10 ball.
The only thing to slow Ethier down of late has been a brief absence he spent with his wife Maggie, an ASU gymnastics coach and cousin of Devil killer Joe Germaine, as she bore the couple’s first child. The team is glad to have him back, since he’s batting .548 in September. And, no, that’s not a typo.
Meanwhile, the Boston Globe ran an in-depth feature on Red Sox second baseman Duston Pedroia’s unorthodox swing. How unorthodox? Apparently, it led Tony Gwynn to underestimate Pedroia – prior to Pedroia tearing his San Diego State club apart – and led the usually stubborn Murphy to give up trying to correct it.
Quoth Pedroia: “I’ve swung like this, dude, since I was like 10. I didn’t really develop it; that’s just what it was. I’ve hit like this my whole life. There’s nothing real complicated about it. I just try to see the ball and hit it. If I get a hit, I get a hit. If I get out, I get out. There’s no secret about it.”
Of course, you already know how we feel about Pedroia. We think the jockey should be AL MVP.
One more quickie. The West Valley View caught up with Goodyear Estrella Foothills High combo guard Corey Hawkins to discuss his recent commitment to ASU men’s basketball coach Herb Sendek.
