Rudy Carpenter is Not the Best College Quarterback in Arizona

The Sporting News thinks is only the eighth best quarterback West of the Mississippi, the third best in the Pac-10, and the second best in the Grand Canyon State. Whatever they’re smoking, we want some of it.

Willie Tuitama VS. Rudy Carpenter

Prior to last weekend’s games, Sporting News ranked every one of college football’s 120 starting quarterbacks. We’re not going to post the full list, but the top 20 is below.

How one would even attempt to research a project like this is beyond us, but it must not have been a terribly scientific endeavor if the area in the rankings between No. 13 and No. 16 is any indication.

  1. Pat White West Virginia
  2. Tim Tebow Florida
  3. Sam Bradford Oklahoma
  4. Chase Daniel Missouri
  5. Matthew Stafford Georgia
  6. Graham Harrell Texas Tech
  7. Dan LeFevour Central Michigan
  8. Mark Sanchez Southern Cal
  9. Cullen Harper Clemson
  10. Curtis Painter Purdue
  11. Rusty Smith Florida Atlantic
  12. Kellen Lewis Indiana
  13. Willie Tuitama Arizona
  14. Todd Reesing Kansas
  15. Brigham Young
  16. Arizona State
  17. Todd Boeckman Ohio State
  18. Nate Davis Ball State
  19. Josh Freeman Kansas State
  20. Jake Locker Washington

That’s right. You’ve got Arizona quarterback Willie Tuitama ranked three spots ahead of our own .

Last time we checked, it was Rudy who on Saturday moved into 12th place on the Pac-10’s career passing yards list and seventh on the conference’s career touchdown passes list. And, last time we checked, it was Rudy who is 3-for-3 in head-to-head showdowns with Tuitama.

And, as the Oregonian pointed out this week, Carpenter takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’. Say what you will about Carpenter (and we know you have) but there’s no way that he should be ranked lower than Tuitama at this point.

Oh, and yes, that’s former Sun Devil of BYU checking in at No. 15. Fellow former Sun Devil Dax Crum of Wyoming ranked No. 94. Did you know they were on the same roster as Carpenter and Sam Keller at one point?

  1. Shouldn’t won-loss record have some bearing in these rankings? If my calculations are correct, Tui and UA are 16-16 in games he’s played. And five of those wins are against non conference foes.

Rudy is 23-13 in games he’s started.

On a side note, there’s no way White is a better QB than Teebow.

  2. Hell, I can’t believe that DUItama is ranked in front of Reesing and Hall, much less Carpenter. What a joke

  3. I think Nate Davis is better than Carpenter of that guy who plays on that team in North Nogales. Maybe it’s because I went to Ball State, or maybe it’s because neither could hold his jock.

  4. The Sporting News couldn’t be less relevant. Getting upset with its rankings is like being angry after arguing with a racist grandparent who doesn’t understand why Asian-Americans prefer not to be called “Orientals.”

(I think about nine years ago, while still at the State Press, I wrote an entire column mocking TSN, ranking it No. 1 among all sports media in the category of “producing meaningless lists” — a ranking that now may belong to ESPN.)
