First things first, Oregon State’s 27-21 upset of top-ranked Southern California last night was a stunner. The Trojans, you may recall, had previously destroyed Virginia and Ohio State and were the only Pac-10 team represented in this week’s top 25.
But it was just another in a series of strange outcomes for the Conference of Champions. Remember, it was only two weeks ago that the Pac-10 was favored in seven of its 10 games—and won just three. We presume you recall the following outcomes:
- BYU 59, UCLA 0. It was the Bruins’ worst loss since 1929.
- UNLV 23, ASU 20. We said it all here.
- New Mexico 35, Arizona 28. We can’t recall a more mercifully-timed UA loss.
- Maryland 36, Cal 27. It was 28-6 heading into the fourth quarter.
- TCU 31, Stanford 14. TCU scored all 17 second-half points.
- Baylor 45, Washington State 17. When was the last time Baylor beat anyone?
- Oklahoma 55, Washington 14. This one would’ve been excusable if it was close.
In just over two weeks since those scores went final, ASU and Oregon lost key non-conference home games against Georgia and Boise State, respectively. And the conference’s marquee program fell to an Oregon State squad that lost to Stanford and was absolutely depantsed by Penn State.
So if you’re still feeling blue over ASU’s two-game losing streak, remember that we’re just seven or eight wins away from a Rose Bowl berth. Hey, someone’s gotta spend New Year’s Day in Pasadena. Why not us?

I hate to say it, but our Rose Bowl hopes took a huge hit last night. If USC would have run the table they would have been in the BCS Championship Game. The second place Pac-10 team would have gone to the Rose Bowl.
Now, it’s very likely that we would have to beat USC to make it to the Rose Bowl. That doesn’t happen too often.
I love to see USC lose — but as my wife asked last night — why the hell can’t we ever do that?
“The second place Pac-10 team would have gone to the Rose Bowl.”
I couldn’t disagree more. What is the likelihood of the second-place team in the Pac-10 being BCS eligible?
We’re down to one team in the Top 25. Obviously we might have a team in the top 15 (or is it 18?) in the BCS standings at the end of the year, but knowing what we know about the Pac-10, that feels unlikely.
Even if USC ran the table and went undefeated, it seems to be asking a lot for ASU, already standing at 2-2 and with one bad loss, to be BCS eligible come December.
But the Holiday and Sun Bowls don’t discriminate against below-15 teams, so our hopes of playing in a good, New Year’s Day bowl went unhindered last night, I think.
“might” was supposed to be the only italicized word there. Sorry for making that tough to read.
How dare you mock my post, and put it all in italics?! You’re dead to me TobiasFunke, dead!
(I didn’t think we had a shot in hell of the Rose Bowl before last night anyway. Really just wishful thinking)
AK47, you’re nothing to me now. You’re not a brother, you’re not a friend. I don’t want to know you or what you do. I don’t want to see you at the hotels, I don’t want you near my house. When you see our mother, I want to know a day in advance, so I won’t be there. You understand?
We’re brothers?! Holy crap! Why didn’t I get the tall genes?!
Whose got odds on who will rep the P-10 in the Rose Bowl? I still say 9 chances in 10 that it’ll be U$C smoking whatever patsy the BigTen sends West.
