It’s back to the grindstone for Arizona State this week as the team takes to the road to face Cal. While the Sun Devils were enjoying a weekend without practice, the Golden Bears were running over Colorado State.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the 42-7 win wasn’t all fun and games. Starting running back Jahvid Best dislocated his elbow, and quarterback Kevin Riley completed just 6 of 13 passes before getting benched. Both positions are now up for grabs.
We’ll offer up more about Cal when we catch up with the team’s beat writer in a few days. We just wanted to shake out the old bye week cobwebs. If you still feel a bit lost, we recapped the first month of the Pac-10 season after USC’s loss last week.
Meanwhile, Fox Sports recently ranked the 10 whiniest coaches in college football. Not surprising to anyone who watched as he repeatedly grandstanded at midfield at Sun Devil Stadium last season, Mike Stoops made the list. In ranking him eighth, Fox Sports didn’t spare the verbal lash.
“Just how does a coach react when losing some in-state recruits to his rival? Whine about the unfairness of it all, of course. “Obviously, Arizona State has turned into a JC [junior college] and we are a four-year college,” Stoops famously said. “According to all the players, they say it is easier to go to school there, easier to get in.” But maybe they go to ASU because their team has beaten you four out of the last five years, Mike.”
And finally, congratulations are in order to any current students out there. You are part of the largest student body in ASU history. The university announced last week that enrollment this fall is 67,082 student—nearly 12,000 more than it was in 2002. Interestingly, over 27,000 students are enrolled in at least one class held at branch locations in Glendale, Mesa or Phoenix.
That’s a whole of not heading South. Sorry, Mike.
