As we pointed out earlier today, Dennis Erickson has already begun recruiting members of the Class of 2012 by offering a scholarship to a high school freshman with a sick highlight reel.
On Sunday he dealt with more pressing recruiting matters – the Class of 2009 – when he offered a scholarship to and received a commitment from Scottsdale Saguaro senior Max Smith.
You can see the 6-foot-3 255-pound tight end score a couple touchdowns Friday night against Chaparral with Erickson in da house in the video below. (It’s real coverage from Ch. 15, so thankfully no rap.)
Smith’s addition puts the number of Class of 2009 commitments at eight. The number includes four Arizonans as you’ll see in the list below.
| Name | Position | Hometown |
| Chris Coyle | TE | Westlake Village, CA |
| Osahon Irabor | DB | Upland, CA |
| Kody Koebensky | OL | Scottsdale, AZ |
| Shane McCullen | ATH | Apache Junction, AZ |
| Brock Osweiler | QB | Kalispell, MT |
| Anthony Rose | LB | Tempe, AZ |
| Max Smith | TE | Scottsdale, AZ |
| Matthew Tucker | ATH | Aurora, CO |
We’ll get to know more about these guys as February’s signing day gets closer. In the meantime, we’ll have to settle for the video below and for this nugget that suggests Smith will have no trouble getting up for rivalry games against Arizona.
On getting ready to face larger rival Chaparral High, Smith said: “Preparing for Chaparral is my favorite time, my favorite week of practice. I don’t care if they go to 6A, I’d love to play them.”

who was the qb? He looked a lot better than rudy carpenter.
You may be right. That’s Cole Rarrick, and he’s apparently a sleeper college football prospect. He’d be more hotly pursued if he hadn’t had to wait behind an established starter the last three years.
