Erickson Offers Scholarship to 14-Year-Old with Killer Highlight Reel

Dennis Erickson is not one to be fashionably late. Perhaps that’s why he offered a scholarship to a high school freshman last week. Hey, we would too after watching the highlight video in this post.

Dennis Erickson’s first two recruiting classes have included 15 Arizonans—and he’s not stopping there.

In addition to landing a verbal commitment from Scottsdale Saguaro tight end Max Smith on Sunday, Erickson’s already begun working on the Class of 2012. That’s right. Late last week, Erickson offered a scholarship to 14-year-old high school freshman Davonte Neal of Laveen Cesar Chavez.

Sure, he’s only 5 feet 10 inches and 165 pounds. But the kid owns the middle school national records in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, scores a touchdown per game as a receiver/returner, and has the sick highlight film below hosted on youtube.

Watch as Neal hurdles a defender (Randy Moss at Marshall style) on the way to a punt return for a touchdown. Look on as Neal blows past defenders while taking a post pattern in for a long score. Take in a high school highlight video scored by Motorhead rather than a rap song soaked in the N-word.

Neal’s dad told espn.com that Erickson wanted to be the first to offer Neal. When he heard Boston College was on the verge of beating him to the punch, Erickson pulled the trigger.

Check back in February of 2012 to find out if Erickson’s itchy trigger finger paid off and lands Neal in maroon and gold. In the meantime, enjoy the video—and the Motorhead.

  1. The practice of offering athletic scholarships to children is an absolute joke. I don’t care what the justification is or what the kid’s “upside” is. The earliest the NCAA should allow scholarships to be offered is after junior year.

  2. I agree. They’re getting younger and younger. The NCAA does have rules around this sort of thing, but they’re obviously not terribly well articulated or enforced. Alas.

  3. As Cartman would say, ” That’s Wrrraaoong”.

But we’ll save him a spot just in case, I can already see him as a top CB in the Pac.

  4. anyone can put together a sick reel of their child’s…at one point in time we all have kids that stand out here and there and if you only put those moments on the net of course they will get scholarships….

  5. There is another running back who is a freshman at Basha who is sick. This is his highlight film from last year. The basha freshman team is undefeated and has a lot of talent.
