Eight former Sun Devils will be inducted into Arizona State’s athletic hall of fame at halftime of Saturday’s game. The class includes former football star and eternal American hero Pat Tillman, but if you’re on this Web site you already know about him.

So that you know why you’re cheering for the rest of the folks on the field at halftime this Saturday, we’ve prepared a brief introduction to the hall of fame class of 2008 concluding this afternoon with the major sport inductees. Check this morning’s post for the minor sport hall of famers.

And now without further ado, we give you the ASU athletics hall of fame class of 2008 …

, Football, 1983-87
A ball-hawking defensive back, Allen’s ASU teams played in three bowl games – including the 1987 Rose Bowl – back when it was so hard to reach the postseason that a nine-year bowl drought wasn’t a punch line. After picking off eight passes as a senior in 1987, Allen became a six-time Pro Bowler during a 14-year NFL career.

, Football, 1992-2000
Snyder is arguably the second most important football coach in ASU history. He lasted longer than anyone other than Frank Kush and he led ASU to one of its two Rose Bowl berths following the ’96 season. Every memory you have of Adam Archuleta, Jake Plummer, Terrell Suggs and Pat Tillman began with Snyder convincing them to play for ASU.

, Basketball, 1995-1998
Only one player in ASU history – Eddie House – has filled the hoop more prolifically than Veal. As a freshman, Veal helped ASU to its only Sweet 16 appearance in the last three decades. By the time he was a senior, the sweet-shooting two-guard was averaging 20.8 points per game to lead the Pac-10 in scoring.

Pat Tillman, Football, 1994-97
What more can one say about Tillman? The defensive leader for two of ASU’s three best teams of the last 20 years, Tillman famously told his teammates to “Give ‘em Hell, Devils” before the 19-0 upset of Nebraska in 1996 and won Pac-10 defensive player of the year honors in 1997. He was, of course, killed in the line of duty while serving with the U.S. Army Rangers in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004. Thousands of fans commemorate his life every spring by participating in the 4.2-mile Pat’s Run events in Tempe and his hometown of San Jose.
