Historically Painful Loss for the Sun Devils

Historic? Yes. Here are three things we think we think after ASU’s historic 27-25 loss to Oregon State on Saturday. What did you take away from the game?

Arizona State Teachers College Bulldogs

1. is (Apparently) No
We were led to believe that this game would be a coming out party for freshman running back Ryan Bass. Instead it was Coloradan Shaun DeWitty leading the way by getting the surprise start and rushing for 110 yards on 16 carries. Bass? Zero yards. Zero carries.

2. Answered the Bell
We’ve been as critical as anyone of Rudy Carpenter. Just see our preseason assessment of his legacy or this video of him stealing a soda from the Memorial Union. But the guy answered the bell against Oregon State and gave us our first chance to win a ballgame in over a month.

3. Making History is Not Always a Good Thing
ASU’s six-game losing streak is tied for the longest in program history. The last time ASU was this consistently bad was 1929, when the stock market crashed and the Arizona State Teachers College Bulldogs (wearing the logo above) lost consecutive games to UTEP, Arizona, NAU, Arizona again, NAU again and Loyola-Marymout. Head coach lost his job after that debacle, and he didn’t even have to play Georgia.

  1. Carpenter still sucks …

  2. OK – My three things:

    1) We played a competitive game for once!! I tip my hat to the team – this game was a LOT closer than I thought it would be.

    2) The lack of TDs in the red zone has hurt us all year… and this game ended up a loss because of it.

    3) We seem to have two big problems: execution and discipline. To have as many mistakes as we did last night (in November!) makes me wonder about the effectiveness of the coaching / teaching. I’m sure talent and youth play a part in the cause – but for me, the buck stops at the coach.

One last thing – Does anyone have some insight into our final 2 point play? Was that our best goal-line option? All I saw was Rudy running for his life with about a dozen black jerseys chasing him.

  3. 1. The officials won this game for the Beavers.
    2. As a senior 4 year starter I would expect Rudy to be able to know when to throw the ball away and when to scramble for yards. Perhaps that falls on the coaching staff.
    3. The defense is Jekyll & Hyde right now. Signs of greatness with some hard hits, run stops & interception for a TD. I won’t go into the down side.

I’m just not as down about this team as it seems like all the fairweather fans and popular media is depicting. Erickson will establish his brand of football with his recruits and I see ASU topping the success we saw last season in 2 or 3 years.

  4. By the way, why didn’t Bass play?

  5. Apparently, they never put Ryan Bass in the game because Shaun DeWitty was rolling and because Bass has been nagged by a hamstring injury. Hopefully we’ll get to see him soon …

  6. How does ASU and Arizona swap sports…. overnight? If you were to ask anybody with a pulse in this state which school would be ranked 15th in the preseason basketball poll and which school would be 2-6 heading into November…. ummm…. wtf??
