Sunday Morning Hangover: ASU-Washington

Victory! Here are three things we think we think after ASU’s 39-19 win over Washington on Saturday. What did you take away from the game?

We've been hording the fireworks all season. May as well use some now.

1. It Feels Great to get Back in the Win Column
Washington is the only team in Division-I without a win, but right now we don’t care. It’s been a painful painful two months. Besides, the Huskies threw everything they had at us – from at least three trick plays to a fourth down gamble on their own half of the field – and any road win is a good win. Congratulations, Sun Devils.

2. is a Heck of a Weapon
Of course, we should add that is heck of a weapon when isn’t running for his life. The senior wide receiver had 11 catches for 150 yards and scored the pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns that finally put the Huskies away. Frankly, we expected more of those kinds of games from Jones this year, but hey at this point we’ll take what we can get.

3. Tomas Weber is Back, Baby
Beginning with the blocked field goal in overtime against UNLV, suffered through a stretch in which he missed four of five kicks. He rebounded last week against Oregon State by nailing four and missing only one (from 44 yards out). And he continued his recovery with a 3-for-3 performance Saturday against Washington.

What’s Your Take, Sun Devils?
Post three things you’re taking away from the game – or just gloat – in the comments below.

  1. Well after the first half was done, I changed the station, however I came back to FSN just curious on how bad we were getting beat, and it turns out that our boys turned around and started dominating them. I think if we have turn arounds like that in EVERY game…we’ll win out.

  2. I watched our mistake-filled first half thinking, “We are a poorly coached team.” But now I am more inclined to think that we are just a young team, making young-team mistakes. Our youth beat UWs youth in the second half.

By the way, my wife made an interesting comment – she said we really need a Rudy Burgess this year. I think we forget the spark that players like RB or Ryan Torain would give our offense. We don’t seem to have that kind of player yet. Maybe Dewitty? Herring?

It was good to win. I think we will win the next two and head down to Tucson for a classic rivalry showdown!

  3. Couldn’t agree more about the need for a playmaker on offense. It really looked like that guy would be Herring but the injuries have been killer. Here’s what we said about Herring after the Stanford game …

“Dimitri Nance is a good back, but Herring adds a dimension to the offense that’s lacking when he’s not in the game. He averaged five yards per carry and on his first touch of the season (the 20-yarder in the second quarter) he looked like an animal finally let out of his cage. His explosive speed and burst to the hole will be badly needed as the competition gets better. It’s time to appreciate Mr. Herring.”

Here’s a little thing we did about Herring before the season fell apart: http://www.echofromthebuttes.com/2008/08/29/keegan-herring-asu-overlooked-superstar/

  4. I hope this is the begnning of a turnaround. Two winnable games and then UofA. Guess anything’s possible …
