3 ASU Football Things: Sunburst Helmets, Kyle Williams and Ruining the Wildcats’ Season

Don’t call it a winning streak! Here are three things we think we think after ASU’s 31-0 homecoming beat-down of Washington State on Saturday. What did you take away from the game?

1. Proud of our Past, Confident in our Future
You didn’t have to be alive in the 1970s to know the name . (Bonus points for knowing and the Malone Boys.) So it was a pleasure to see the team honor the ‘70s era Sun Devils by donning retro sunburst helmets resembling the one featured above.

2. The Receiving Corps has a Bright Future
At Echo from the Buttes, we love —even though Rudy Carpenter thinks he’s slow. But we must admit that we’re excited about the future of our receiving corps. and combined to catch three touchdown passes Saturday, and will eventually return to form. Now all we have to do is fine someone to throw them the ball next season.

3. Two Down, Two to Go
The Sun Devils now have two wins under their belts since that history-making six-game losing streak. Two more wins – over UCLA and Arizona – and we’re bowl eligible. We know everyone was hoping for no worse than a Sun Bowl appearance this season. But at this point, wouldn’t the season be at least partially redeemed if the Devils punctuate a four-game winning streak with a soul-crushing win over the Wildcats? We think so.

What’s Your Take, Sun Devils?
What’d you take away from the game last night? If the Sun Devils win out and crush Arizona’s dreams, can we look back at this season semi-fondly? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. If I remember, wasn’t the sunburst logo meant to tie us in (mentally) with the Fiesta Bowl?

No TV, so I could only listen to this one – but boy, why does our offense seem so out-of-sync this far in the season??

Regardless, it’s a 2 game season now. Both will be big, exciting games. We will need to be firing on all cylinders! GO DEVILS!!!

  2. The offense was definitely discombobulated in the first quarter yesterday. There were a lot of breakdowns on the offensive line and Rudy Carpenter missed at least one wide open deep throw. They made up for it, but they’re going to need to play better from the start against UCLA – and definitely against UA – if they’re going to play in a bowl game.

As for the sunburst logo, I’m not sure if it’s tied to the Fiesta Bowl. That’d be a good history report though :)

  3. Both my dad (an ASU alumni) and I truly believe that if we are going to win the game against UofA, Carpenter needs to sit on the bench. He has proven too many times this season that he isn’t AT ALL as beneficial to our offense as everyone originally thought he would be. Last night, just like pretty much every other night this season, he continuously threw passes to players who were obviously being pressured, instead of those who were wide open. Sullivan, on the other hand, is making passes that make more sense. Even if passes are being made to less threatening players who may be a little slower when it comes to running, that’s okay, as long as we are getting those much-needed 1st downs. Sullivan needs to be on the line-up for the UofA game if we want to win this game.

  4. At this point, I care about one thing and one thing only. And that is beating the Northern Mexico Community College Wildcats in the season finale. If we can do that, I’m still happy.

Other than that… this season can just go away.

Oh yeah, the receiving corps is sick. We’re in good shape for a few years.

  5. F**k ASU! U of A is gonna hand you your asses on December 2nd. See ya in T-TOWN!

  6. I don’t know about ya’ll, but I don’t plan on being within 90 miles of Tucson on December 2. There’s barely enough going on down there on the weekends — let alone on a Tuesday.

Kudos to the White Sox for recognizing and getting the hell out of dodge.
