3 ASU Hoops Things: Jamelle McMillan, Taylor Rohde and The Inferno

We won’t do it for every game, but for a season opener? Here are three things we think we think after ASU’s 80-64 win over Mississippi Valley State on Friday. What did you take away from the game?

1. > (?)
Derek Glasser has been our point guard for the better part of two years. But on Friday it was Jamelle McMillan leading the team—and doing a darn fine job of it. He scored four points and had three assists to only one turnover. Glasser had five points with three assists to one turnover. Did McMillan start because of Glasser’s knee injury or because he’s progressing? Only time will tell.

2. is …
… we’re not sure. Excuse us for thinking that this freshman class was all about Missourian , but we were excited to see fellow freshman Taylor Rohde of Phoenix Pinnacle pick up 12 minutes off the bench for the Sun Devils. Rohde? Coy? Can you get the ball to Mr. Harden? That’s all we care about! :)

3. The Inferno is Painfully Transparent
The ASU marketing department determined that the student section should be named The Inferno. This is definitely the safe (read: boring) marketing move. Herbivores or the Herb Garden are much more fun and quirky. The Inferno is marketing try to shove a gimmick down your throats like standing until the opponent scores or the marching band’s “world famous” explosion block. Three cheers to the gents that invented “Herbivores”. Fine Sun Devils all of ye.

  1. 1. McMillan and Glasser will split minutes just about right down the middle, me-thinks. McMillan’s athletic upside is outstanding, and Glasser takes care of the rock. It’s a luxury to be able to throw two very effective looks out there at the point.

    2. Taylor Rhode looked a little bit lost out there, but I’ll chalk that up to nerves. I’m hoping Coy gets some quality minutes as well in the near future, just to see what he’s all about. He’s supposed to be a quality hybrid player– lankster with a shooter’s touch– a look that could help the Devils.

    3. I didn’t even hear “The Inferno” over the PA once, I don’t think. I do know they actually formed a student section committee complete with student officials in the off-season, and it showed during the Delta Devils’ free-throws. Did anyone else catch the awesome “distraction” system? Not to mention how PACKED “The Inferno” was! Bravo!

  2. Sorry to say, but the inferno is a good idea. Yes i agree with you, herbivores is a good idea, but what happens if he leaves. The inferno is the start of something that will be around for ages. And we were loud, the first couple of rows, as i was in the front row. We still need the other students to be loud, but come the time to play uofa, ucla, and the bigger schools i feel confident we will step it up and be louder. Also, the free throw distractions are new, and we are trying to get the rest of the section to do it too, arm sway worked almost 50% of the time. Others include sitting down and jumping up when he shoots, makin the false start motion, or just going crazy.

  3. Welcome, TheInferno. All opinions are respected at Echo from the Buttes. We’ve added a poll at the top of this post. Vote yay or nay on naming the student section The Inferno! :)

  4. The Inferno? Heck ya! Feel the heat baby!
