The Eyes of Texas will be on the Sun Devils
Our weekly update on the Arizona State women’s basketball team finds the Sun Devils with a new star on the floor and depth in the post. They’re going to need both when they face undefeated and sixth-ranked Texas.

Last week (1-0, 7-2 overall): ASU 68, UC Riverside 45
What Did We Learn: That the No. 21 Sun Devils can certainly score in bunches when they need to. In Sunday’s contest against UC Riverside, ASU started the second half on a 36-9 run to turn a close game into a blowout for its fourth consecutive victory. Quoth head coach Charli Turner Thorne: “Absolutely we have more depth, and we are built for a full-court game.”
That depth was aided by the ASU debut of junior college transfer Jazlyn Davis, who scored four points in 11 minutes after missing the first eight games because of an eligibility issue. The Sun Devils, who beat the Highlanders in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament, were led by guard Briann January, who scored 18 points.
Star of the Week: The Sun Devils dominated on the boards, posting a 43-19 rebounding edge over the Highlanders, and post Becca Tobin (pictured above) was a big reason why. Tobin, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, ripped down 13 rebounds in just 16 minutes of play. Tobin’s physical play around the basket was key for ASU, which lost starting center Sybil Dosty for large stretches of the game due to foul trouble. Quoth Tobin: “(Rebounding is) what we need to focus on right now. Our team is doing a great job at it too.” Tobin added six points and two blocked shots.
What’s Next: The Sun Devils have prepared for the Pac-10 season with high-profile non-conference games in recent years, and this season is no different. For the second time this season, ASU will play a top 10 team when it travels to take on No. 6 Texas on Thursday.
The Longhorns won a showdown of their own on Sunday, defeating No. 7 Tennessee, the defending national champions, 73-59 in Austin. Texas is 9-0 for the first time since 1987-88. The hard-nosed defense that ASU has been displaying this season will be tested by Texas’ star guard, Brittainey Raven, who led the Longhorns with 21 points against the Lady Vols.
On Sunday, ASU will play Xavier at Wells Fargo Arena. The Musketeers ran their record to 8-4 with a 71-66 victory over Michigan State on Sunday. Jeri Taylor led Xavier with 25 points.

It’s been a couple of years since a CTT team has beaten a good team. Why? Because CTT’s system doesn’t allow for the presence of a start player who can take over a game. Why would any five-star recruit want to come play for CTT knowing that she’ll be lucky to get 25 minutes/game. ASU will never take it to the next level (Pac-10 champions and final four) until the system changes.
I agree man. CTT is a great coach and has done great things for this program. But we lack that one game-changer type player that we can depend on. I wish the Lady Devils luck tonight in Texas.
Go Devils!
