Dennis Erickson and ASU Football Sign Four Midyear Recruits

The Sun Devil football program grew by four bodies yesterday as junior college and high school prospects eligible to enroll at ASU in the spring semester signed letters of intent. Here’s a sneak peak at the four large gentlemen heading to Tempe.

DE , Orange Coast College (Calif.)
DeLeone, 6 feet 3 and 245 pounds, has three years to play two despite the fact that he’s already 25 years old. He served four years in the Coast Guard out of high school. Assuming sophomore-to-be Lawrence Guy remains at tackle, DeLeone should fill in immediately for departing senior . will man the opposite end position. Perhaps best of all, he was turned away from Oregon in the last weeks of the recruiting season.

CB , Cerritos College (Calif.)
At 5 feet 11 and 185 pounds, Lewis is a speedster who returned kickoffs for Cerritos. But ASU already has a pretty darn good returner in , so where does Lewis fit into the puzzle? We’re guessing junior-to-be will man one cornerback spot. The other will be competed between Lewis and incumbents and .

S , Aurora Grandview HS (Col.)
and the ASU coaching staff are happy to have the 6-foot-3 190-pound Tucker. Now they’ve got to figure out what to do with him. Some list him as a safety. Others as an athlete. We kind of like the idea of a tweener like Tucker adding weight and wreaking havoc with his speed as an outside linebacker a la . But we’ll leave that decision up to coach Erickson.

QB Brock Osweiler, Kalispell Flathead HS (Mont.)
A standout in hoops, the 6-foot-8 235-pound Osweiler originally committed to play basketball at Gonzaga before deciding his future was on the gridiron. (That’s him striking the Heisman pose for the The Daily Inter Lake above.) We only gave him a 10% chance of winning the quarterback job next year, but he didn’t graduate early from high school for kicks. Armchair recruiters may enjoy the video below of him running all over high school opponents.

  1. My vote is for Dean DeLeone. I know Osweiler is the sexy pick because he’s a QB, but there’s something about a JuCo defensive end with a guaranteed spot in the starting lineup. (See Derrick Rodgers or, to a much lesser extent, Luis Vasquez.) Plus, QB is such a crap shoot.

  2. i think we need the most help at CB singfield and carr werent cuting it and bolden had a down year. Our D-line is already pretty good Deleone just adds depth and Brock and Tucker might make an impact next year but probably in 2 or 3 years

  3. I hope Coach Erickson and Coach Sendek can work out a deal to share Brock Osweiler. It’d be great to have him on the football field and if he’s good enough to play for Gonzaga he’d certainly make a nice addition to the Sun Devil basketball squad – even if it’s just as a bench player who joins the team after the football season. They can always use another big body!

  4. Im excited to see this Deleone kid play, who needs Devon Kennard when you can sign a JUCO recruit who can make an impact right away, who isnt coming off a major knee injury, and can run a 4.4, yes thats right, he ran a 4.4 at his junior college in orange county
