BYU’s Last Second Shot, You be the Judge
Posted on December 21st, 2008 by ScribeDevil
Did BYU’s Charles Abouo get the would-be game-winner off in time? Or did James Harden and the Sun Devils deserve the win? You be the judge.

I ran that back on the DVR a few times, and that’s the closest last-second call I’ve ever seen. It was basically a coin flip, and we got lucky. Those were two evenly matched teams.
I dont think it is a coin flip of whether it counted or not. Clearly, even on that video, and even on the big screen at the game, you can tell that his fingertips were still on the ball when time ran out. The refs got it right
I do think the refs got it right, but come on, that was close!
Who’s thankful for instant replay in basketball? A few years back, ASU loses that game.
yes it was close, but the refs got it right. Look at the video, when the red comes on, BYU player is still pushing the ball towards the basket, and you can clearly see the ball is still on his fingertips. You must be blind not to see that it was the right call to wave it off!
I meant the refs got it right in the end, after the replay.
The game wouldn’t and shouldn’t have come down to a call like that if it weren’t for the likes of some refs and their “lovefest” with Harden. He’s the next Mr. Flop and Mr. Stiffarm. He’d be better suited for the ASU football team.
Looking at the bigger picture … there were probably more people cheering for BYU than ASU at that game.
It was only a matter of time before the tears spilled over onto Echo from the Buttes.
I’m not sure where your “Mr. Flop” assessment comes from, J9. Harden takes it HARD to the hoop every time, and is obviously more bent on trying to score DESPITE the foul instead of making it obvious he WAS fouled. Look how frustrated he is when his shots don’t drop for an And-one for evidence.
And kudos to David White for deflecting the cold, hard truth of the post (that the refs got the eventual call right) with a childish lie about attendance.
I dig BYU’s stockpile of shooters and Cummard’s local connection (despite me being a Dobson Mustang, through and through), but from now on I’ll cringe at the thought of their fanbase’s near-universal sob-fest over the past few days.
Let’s see…. how many foul shots did Harden get alone compared to BYU as a team? Hmmmmm…..
Drive to the rack, and you’re likely to get fouled. Shoot from outside, and you’re not. It’s that simple.
Each team took 52 shots in the game. For BYU, 26 were from beyond the arc (50% of their shots). ASU only attempted 17 3-pointers (33%).
That’s a significant disparity. Objectively, the 26-18 personal foul gap doesn’t look so bad when you take that into consideration, does it?
ya J9, there were way more ASU fans there. The only reason why BYU fans were there was because Lee Cummard is from AZ, so he had his whole family, keep in mind he is mormon and therefore really big family, and thats all the BYU fans there. And I agree with Bold Saguaro, you drive to the rack, you get fouled, and that is what Harden does. Stop complaining about Harden throwing elbows because he wasnt, i was standing right in front of it in the student section. He was instead getting hacked every drive and therefore free throws
Enjoy your superstar while you have him. He will continue to get star treatment. Best of luck to the ASU Hardens! BYU learned alot from that game. Like what not to do when you are up by 10 pts late in the 2nd half. They shot themselves in the foot time and time again.
I should hope there were more ASU fans at a home game…. BTW, your coach was way classy. He praised the Cougs after the game and was very impressed with them. He was the most impressive part of the ASU Hardens.
ASU Hardens…did you by chance see the game yesterday, or the stats, all 5 of our starters scored in double figures. The fact is, yes, Harden is our main scorer, but we have other guys that can step it up and score, seee Pendergraph, Abbot, and Kuksiks. Nice try on bashing ASU, im assuming your a uofa fan, but you fail once again
TheInferno = FIRED UP! I like it!
Say what you want to say, but I saw the game and that is my opinion of it. It was a great game and I felt like the PAC 10 officials were way biased. It was so obvious. Oh well, life goes on and there are much better things to worry about in life.
Merry Christmas!
And to bad they were not pac10 officials, try Big East officials. Yes, they may be biased, but look at the whole game, BYU didnt get called on numerous pushes, hacks, and over the backs on rebounds
Check again. They were PAC 10 officials. It was one of the worst games I have ever seen by any official. Absolutely unbelievable. But, as I said, life goes on. BYU will bounce back nicely and have the Hardens to thank for the adversity.
no you check again, they were Big East. And im cheering for BYU the rest of the season too cuz the better they do the better the win looks for us
I checked again, and they were PAC 10 officials. You can be in denial all you want, but they were and it definitely had an impact on the game. I will also be cheering for the Hardens the rest of the season so BYU looks better.
Check your sources, but I have proof they were PAC 10 officials. Go to ESPN.com where the head of PAC-10 officials (McCabe) defends the call of his officials in that game to Andy Katz. The head ref in that game was Brills. Do a google search and check some PAC-10 conference game box scores and you will see that Brills is most definitely a PAC-10 official.
Well i was told by one of the equipment guys during the game, that is good friends with the person i was sitting next to in the student section, and said they were Big East. And beliebe me, i am not in denial, BYU got plenty of calls, and no calls, that went their way. Your just upset cuz Harden is a great player and knows how to get to the line, by driving to the lane. Its not his fault BYU was trying to injure him the whole game and ended up going to the line that many times.
WHATEVER! Like I said, enjoy your star and know that I am cheering for him now too! I hope he continues to stiffarm his defenders and about rip their heads off, yet still gets to the free throw line. I hope that he continues to get more free throws himself than the opposing team. I’m not denying that he is a great player, but there is now doubt that he knows how to get to the free throw line, no matter what. He had lots and lots of great drives through the lane, and drew alot of fouls. But, there were some VERY questionable calls and star treatment going on. Believe me, I have the game still and can watch and am so amazed at some of those calls his way. WOW!!! He really was fun to watch, however. BYU plays Tulsa on Tuesday, and then Wake Forest on Saturday….that will be a tough week!
