Sun Devil hockey sure likes their trophies.

The first traveling rivalry trophy has come into the fold for Arizona State in the form of the Ed Robson Cup. The trophy will be shared with Colorado College and awarded to the winner of the season series between the two teams.

Ed is an alumnus of Colorado College ('55) and the namesake of Ed Robson Arena, opened in 2021. After entering real estate development with Del Webb, Ed would start Robson Communities in 1972 by designing the flagship community Sun Lakes in the Southeast Valley. Today, Robson Communities consists of five 55+ communities in Arizona.

Athletic director Graham Rossini had the following to say on Ed being the trophy's namesake:

Ed Robson’s connection to ASU spans more than four decades, and his impact across this university and the state is hard to overstate. In hockey, competing for a Cup carries a different level of pride and tradition, so it feels right that his name is tied to something our teams will battle for every year. We have a great deal of respect for Colorado College, and we’re excited to build this into something that grows in significance over time.

The Robson family maintains close connections with Arizona State University. Ed's wife Karrin Taylor Robson is an alumnus of ASU, earning her Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1988 and her Juris Doctor from the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law in 1994. She would go on to serve on the Arizona Board of Regents from 2017-2021 under Governor Doug Ducey.

The trophy will be awarded based on regular season results between the two teams, the higher point total attained in all matchups will determine the winner (3 points for regulation win, 2 points for overtime/shootout win, 1 point for overtime/shootout loss). The Sun Devils and Tigers are scheduled to play two games this season, with the trophy being first awarded at the conclusion of the series on December 4-5 at Mullett Arena.
