Echo From The Buttes Top 25: Week 1 sees 5 SEC teams in the top ten

As the college football season begins, Echo From The Buttes is bringing back its top 25 poll. Four Big 12 programs made the top 25, and one other received votes.

1. Ohio State (1-0)

Ohio State received half of the poll’s first-place votes. The Buckeyes dominated Ball State and face-ranked Texas this week.

2. Georgia (1-0)

The Bulldogs were in the top five on all of the pollsters' ballots after defeating Tennessee State. They face off against Western Kentucky on Saturday.

3. Indiana (1-0)

The Hoosiers received the other half of the poll’s first-place votes after defeating North Texas. They face FCS Howard this week.

4. Notre Dame (1-0)

The Fighting Irish slide in at No. 4 after defeating Wisconsin. Notre Dame draws Rice on Saturday.

5. Texas (1-0)

Two votes separated No. 3 Indiana and No. 5 Texas. The Longhorns dominated Texas State, and they host No. 1 Ohio State on Saturday.

6. Miami (FL) (1-0)

It’s a sizable drop in votes to Miami, who beat conference rival Stanford. They host FCS Florida A&M on Thursday.

7. Oregon (1-0)

Oregon slots in one vote behind Miami after beating Boise State. The Ducks travel to Oklahoma State this weekend.

T8. Alabama (1-0)

Alabama starts a cluster of SEC teams. The Crimson Tide blew out East Carolina last week and faces SEC foe Kentucky this week.

T8. LSU (1-0)

The Lane Kiffin-era started with a win against Clemson last week. Compared to Alabama, LSU has the lowest singular rank at No. 16, and Alabama has the highest singular rank at No. 5. The Tigers play Louisiana Tech this week.

10. Oklahoma (1-0)

Oklahoma was a vote behind the two schools at T8 and had a much narrower range of votes. The Sooners blanked UTEP and travel to Michigan this weekend.

11. Texas A&M (1-0)

Texas A&M ends the SEC cluster three votes behind Alabama and LSU. The Aggies dominated Missouri State and face Arizona State this weekend.

12. Texas Tech (1-0)

Texas Tech marks the first Big 12 school in the rankings. The Red Raiders defeated FCS Abilene Christian and visit Oregon State on Saturday.

13. BYU (1-0)

One vote separated the top two teams in the Big 12. TTU had the higher singular rank at No. 8. The Cougars dominated FCS Utah Tech and host conference rival Arizona this week.

14. Ole Miss (1-0)

Ole Miss beat Louisville last Sunday. The Rebels face Charlotte this week. One voter had them in the top ten.

15. USC (2-0)

USC kicks off three consecutive BIG 10 teams. The Trojans beat Fresno State and San Jose State over the past two weeks, and they host Louisiana this week.

16. Penn State (1-0)

A single vote was the difference between USC and Penn State. USC had the wider spread of the two schools. The Nittany Lions blanked Marshall and face Temple on Saturday.

17. Washington (1-0)

Washington rounds out the Big Ten streak. The Huskies beat Washington State and host Utah State this week.

T18. Houston (1-0)

Houston was one vote behind Washington. It had a wide margin as they were as high as No. 12 and as low as No. 23. The Cougars beat Oregon State and face FCS Southern this week.

T18. SMU (1-0)

SMU had a smaller margin than Houston, as it was ranked as high as No. 16 and as low as No. 21. The Mustangs narrowly beat Florida State and face FCS UC Davis this weekend.

20. Virginia (1-0)

It’s a big drop in votes from SMU and Houston to Virginia, who only received votes from half of the voters in the poll. The Cavaliers beat NC State and face FCS Norfolk State on Friday.

21. Tennessee (1-0)

The final SEC team in the rankings is Tennessee. Half of the voters ranked the Volunteers in the top 20, whereas the other half did not rank them at all. They dominated FCS Furman last week and visit Georgia Tech this weekend.

22. Utah (1-0)

Like Tennessee, half of the voters put Utah in the top 20, and the other half did not rank the Utes. They dominated FCS Idaho and host Arkansas this week.

23. Illinois (1-0)

The majority of the voters put Illinois in the poll after it blew out UAB last week. The Fighting Illini host Duke this week.

24. Iowa (1-0)

Half of the voters put Iowa at No. 20, and the other half did not rank the Hawkeyes. They shut out Northern Illinois last week and face Iowa State this weekend.

25. Louisville (0-1)

Louisville is the only team that lost in the poll, as all but one of the voters voted for the Cardinals. They narrowly lost to Ole Miss last week and face FCS Villanova on Friday.

Others receiving votes: Missouri, Michigan, Wake Forest, James Madison, Virginia Tech, Colorado, Pitt and Boise St.
