Matthew Mayich collapsed from heat stroke, per family's lawyer

As details continue to come out regarding the collapse of Sun Devil hockey player Matthew Mayich, and the circumstances that led to it, the attorney for Mayich's family revealed on Wednesday the cause of the collapse.

Per the attorney, Rob Carey, Mayich suffered "exertional heat stroke that caused a lack of oxygen to the brain." Carey clarified that "there were no other contributing conditions."

Some had speculated that there may have been an underlying medical condition that, coupled with the extreme workout described as "military style" and led by a former Green Beret, led to the collapse. However, Carey's update leaves no room for that possibility.

Carey also added that Mayich had exhibited signs of being unwell prior to his collapse, saying that Mayich was "disoriented and dizzy."

Arizona State has not commented on the incident beyond stating that James Rund, a senior vice president at the university who served as interim athletics director prior to Graham Rossini being hired to the role, is leading an internal review.

Mayich's family has called for an independent investigation. They have also asked for head coach Greg Powers and the rest of the coaching staff to be suspended during said investigation.

At the same time, The Athletic reports that the university's campus police have launched their own investigation into the matter, though not much else is known at this point.
