When Arizona State takes to the field on Saturday night, they will face a Morgan State team that, like many FCS programs, keeps opposing defenses on their toes in keeping a multiple formation philosophy to their playbook. Over the course of a single drive, don't be surprised to see backfield rotation from Keith Jenkins Jr. and Dorian Harris, vertical downfield threats from wide receiver Justin Perry, and multiple tight end sets featuring Alex Simmons and Malachi Bryant.

Quarterback

After starting his NCAA career with limited action for Maryland in 2023-24 and no game action for Eastern Michigan in 2025, Cameron Edge has emerged to be the starting quarterback for the Bears in 2026, earning a spot as one of the team captains this season. A traditional pocket passer, Edge uses his 6'2", 230 lb frame to stand tall under pressure, and has a strong arm to unlock the deep threats in his wide receiver room. While not considered a dual-threat running quarterback, he does possess enough mobility to be able to scramble and extend plays, with few designed running plays in his arsenal. His debut for the Bears on August 29th showed promise, completing 13 of his 19 passing attempts for 167 yards, one touchdown against one interception and 8.8 yards per attempt.

Receivers and Tight Ends

Preseason All-MEAC Second Team wide receiver Justin Perry is the established leader on the outside for this group. Coming off a freshman campaign that saw him haul in 25 catches for 464 yards and 5 touchdowns, he began his sophomore year for the Bears with 4 catches for 45 yards in last week's opening win. His route running abilities allow him to create separation in the quick slant scheme run by offensive coordinator Apollo Wright, and reliable hands make him a sure frequent target throughout the season. Incoming transfer Joseph Towler possesses dynamic speed downfield, as shown by his 68 yard touchdown reception above, while Malique Leatherbury and JoJo Kennerly Jr. are featured as slot pieces in quick sets. Supplemental depth in Quavel Thornton, Jahlun Flud, and David Okoi allow for fresh legs to be on the field at any time.

The tight end side of the room also received preseason All-MEAC honors, this time in the former of First Team representative Alex Simmons. Utilized heavily in play-action scenarios, Simmons is a mismatch over the middle at 6'3" and 230 lbs. Malachi Bryant brings the physical element to his game and features in two-tight end and red zone sets, with blocking depth in run-heavy formations in the form of freshmen Destin Mitchell and Nick Williams.

Running Backs

As referenced in the open, the rotational depth is the strength for the Bears. Senior Keith Jenkins Jr. earned Second-Team Preseason All-MEAC honors, possessing solid top-end speed and showing his value as a pass catcher out of the backfield. Sophomore Dorian Harris is the workhorse of the room, rushing for 233 yards in 11 games in 2025. Incoming transfer from Shepherd University Jordan Barnett brings a physical presence in short yardage situations, with a deeper rotation including Marquez Spells, Colin Reynolds, and Jaylen Burke to stay fresh in the late stages of games. This running back by committee approach comes with the design to wear down the defensive front, while working in check-downs in the passing game to catch opponents off guard.

Offensive Line

The imposing figure of Tyler Habersham-Agbemenu looms large over opposing defensive fronts. Standing 6'4" and weighing in at 370 lbs, his size is key to success for the Bears in short-yardage and gap running situations. Kelton Sparks, Shane Marks, and Matthew McDonald join with a rotation supplemented by Sean Hargan, Kerrick Jackson, Cameron Ross, and Daniel Casillas.

Closing Thoughts

This looks to be a case where Morgan State is punching above their weight class, and happy to get their reps in against a Power Four program. The front seven for the Sun Devils is designed to collapse the pocket and keep quarterbacks off-footed, while the secondary will mix their coverages effectively, forcing Edge to reach his check-downs under that heavy pressure.

The Sun Devils and Bears will square off from Mountain America Stadium on Saturday, September 5th. Kickoff is at 7pm on ESPN+.
