Sun Devil Film School: Breaking down Grayson Rigdon's two touchdowns
In the first-ever Echo From The Buttes film breakdown, we broke down sophomore running back Grayson Rigdon. He scored his first two touchdowns of his career in last Saturday’s game against Morgan State.
Rigdon was a scout-team player all last season, and he finally got his chance and showed up in a big way.
The first play was in the second quarter. There were two tailbacks, one on each side of the quarterback: Cutter Boley. Boley did a fake handoff to sixth-year running back Marquis Gillis. Rigdon ran to the flat left, caught it, made a man miss the tackle, and scored the touchdown.
Three different guys made key blocks. Senior wide receiver Omarion Miller forced a Morgan State defensive back to the left, clearing open space for Rigdon, who made a potential tackler miss. Then senior wide receiver Reed Harris slammed a defensive back into the ground. Gillis then shoved another guy out of the picture.
The running back and a pair of wideouts' blocks cleared the way for Rigdon to score.
Later in the third quarter, Rigdon was the only back on the play. He was to Boley’s left.
Rigdon ran a wheel route to the left where there was a linebacker and a safety in the area. The linebacker jumped in on a double team on sophomore wide receiver Raiden Vines-Bright, who was on a crossing route from the left side. Meanwhile, the safety had backed off several yards, allowing Rigdon to get open.
Boley intentionally did not look in Rigdon’s direction. Boley eventually found Rigdon, who made a leaping grab. Rigdon then made the safety miss and found open space, scoring his second touchdown of the night and his career.
Rigdon could be a guy in the future for the Sun Devils. They have a huge backfield, as they used all seven running backs last week, and the pecking order is unknown for the rest of the season. He might be the guy who takes the top spot in the backfield with 11 weeks of the season remaining.
