In this week’s Echo From The Buttes Film breakdown, we broke down the two kick returns for touchdowns in Arizona State’s game against Kansas in London.

In the second quarter, senior punter Nick McLarty booted a ball to Kansas sophomore returner Tate Nagy. Arizona State’s contain guy, freshman defensive back Zeth Thues, breaks, allowing Nagy to get to the sideline, get upfield, beat all of the Arizona State players, and score.

Thues is the guy nearest to the sideline. He has to go left to force Nagy back toward a cluster of four guys. He does not do that and gets beat to the numbers and toward the sideline, and all the other four overrun, and Nagy has a bunch of free space. Everyone else gets blocked or is just too slow to catch Nagy at this point, and he scored.

To start the second half, Kansas redshirt freshman kicker Dane Efird kicks off senior wide receiver Jaren Hamilton. Hamilton shows why he has the nickname “turbo” on this play. He makes a couple guys miss around the 20, including a guy moving too far upfield.

Hamilton runs to the sideline, and all he has to do is stay inbounds, as it is smooth sailing to the end zone. Special teams made it look really easy to score on returns in this game.

This week, Arizona State’s punt returners will have to catch Baylor’s senior punter Palmer Williams’ ramadamahamslams, which is how Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham described Williams’ punts.
