As the saga surrounding the August 20th collapse of defenseman Matthew Mayich continues, the start to the 2026-27 season looms closer and closer. With just over three weeks until the scheduled opener on October 2nd at Lindenwood University, all signs point to the season at least starting on time.

Little has been said by the university throughout this process, but a statement was released on September 5th offering support to Mayich as he remains hospitalized at the time of this writing.

A spokesperson for ASU's athletic department stated on Tuesday that the program is sticking to that statement at this time.

Of importance throughout these events, head coach Greg Powers remains in his position with no change in status for him or any other member of the coaching staff. The X profile that is linked in Powers' bio on the Sun Devil Athletics site no longer exists.

Powers is set to enter his 12th season as head coach of ASU's NCAA hockey program, his 19th season as head coach between the ACHA and NCAA programs, and is under contract after signing an endowment-granting contract extension that runs through 2030.

We will continue to update this story as more details become available.
