On London eve, we here at Echo From The Buttes have digested your post submissions over tea and biscuits, and here’s what we have for you.

Where will ASU go for hockey leadership if what seems like the inevitable happens and the newly endowed head coach is fired? Is the season a bust? - Greg in Chandler

At this point with so many unknowns still present in this situation, there can only be speculation. We here at Echo From The Buttes choose to continue to offer prayers to Matthew Mayich and his family, and allow the various reviews of that August 20th workout to play out. Only after a definitive statement coming from the investigation can a path forward be discussed.

To what do you attribute the repeated issues with [Kenny Dillingham] teams committing so many penalties? - Greg in Chandler

Coach Dillingham addressed this following the loss at Texas A&M last weekend, citing that many penalties are execution-based rather than procedural. One thing to bear in mind in this new transfer portal era is players who make moves more frequently than others are consistently learning new playbooks. The plays may be the same deep at their core, but each program has different nuances to their playbook that can leave players on the wrong foot if they’re not adequately prepared.

Additionally, when the Sun Devils are facing pressure situations, players have often found themselves over-extended and put in a compromising position where they feel they have to take drastic effort to stay in the play. Coach Dillingham continues to put the responsibility on himself to make sure that his players are well attuned to the situation so they don’t get caught having to make unnecessary moves that lead to those penalties.
