Big scores, big wins for Big 12 in Week 1

16 teams, 16 games, one international opener, and the first week of the Big 12 season is in the books. After TCU opened the action from Ireland in their 15-10 loss to North Carolina, the week wrapped up in the desert with Arizona State's 70-7 win over Morgan State. Crooked numbers and blowouts were the tale of the week across the conference, and we've got you covered on how the rest of the teams fared.

No. 21 Utah 66 | Idaho 14

Devon Dampier and Byrd Ficklin combined for 5 touchdowns in the air while four different Utes found the endzone on the ground in the season-opening romp of the Vandals.

UCF 73 | Bethune-Cookman 6

360 yards of rushing and 7 touchdowns on the ground for UCF made it an easy day for quarterbacks Alonza Barnett III and Keyone Jenkins. Bethune-Cookman avoided the shutout with an 8 yard touchdown pass from Joel Morris as time expired in the 4th quarter.

Colorado 14 | Georgia Tech 13

Julian Lewis engineered a touchdown drive in the final minute and the Buffaloes special teams blocked a last-second game-winning field goal attempt, returning the favor after the Yellow Jackets blocked one of their own earlier in the quarter, pulling out a key road victory in one of the few matchups against another power conference team.

Kansas 51 | Long Island University 6

The Jayhawks exploded for 24 points in the second quarter and the rout was on in this tune-up before the Border War with Missouri next weekend. The Sharks never found the endzone, limited to two field goals in the 4th quarter.

No. 12 Texas Tech 33 | Abilene Christian 10

Will Hamond quieted the offseason noise surrounding the quarterback position, throwing for 298 yards in his return from injury. The Wildcats stood tall in the red zone, holding the Red Raiders to four field goals, three of them on red zone stops.

No. 14 BYU 63 | Utah Tech 7

Bear Bachmeier had his day wrapped up by halftime with 198 yards and three passing touchdowns, plus one more on the ground. The Cougars even added on a 100 yard kickoff return to open the second half in this very one-sided affair.

No. 23 Houston 33 | Oregon State 20

Braden Atkinson went toe to toe with Conner Weigman, out-throwing the Cougars QB 376-305, but the Cougars took advantage in the secong quarter by shutting out the Beavers 10-0 in the frame to pull off the win. Oregon State won the turnover battle but a missed field goal and two turnovers on downs cut in to the Beavers opportunities.

West Virginia 31 | Coastal Carolina 24

Deuce Bailey's 373 yard day through the air was not enough to overcome 100 yard days from Cam Cook and Michael Hawkins as the Mountaineers held on for the narrow win.

Iowa State 38 | Southeast Missouri State 10

The post-Matt Campbell era arrived in Ames as Jimmy Rogers secured his first win for the Cyclones. Jaylen Raynor threw for 184 yards and accounted for 4 of Iowa State's 5 touchdowns on the day.

Auburn 17 | Baylor 16

The Tigers got out to a 10-0 lead late in the second quarter but saw the Bears charge back to tie the game midway through the 4th. After Auburn's 3:50 drive to take the 17-10 lead, DJ Lagway methodically worked a touchdown drive of his own in the closing seconds. Choosing to go for the win rather than send the game to overtime, the Bears were stopped on Lagway's attempted 2-point conversion.

Cincinnati 34 | Boston College 15

JC French was the offense for the Bearcats, rushing for three touchdowns and throwing for another despite being outgained in total offense by the Eagles, 388-339. Two turnovers for Boston College kept the offense from truly finding their groove.

Tulsa 24 | Oklahoma State 10

This was not the start that Eric Morris was hoping for as the Cowboys lost their 12th straight game to extend the mark for longest current losing streak among FBS teams. Drew Mestemaker had a solid debut with 241 passing yards, but the Golden Hurricanes forced 4 turnovers and limited Mestemaker to 4.9 yards per passing play.

Kansas State 71 | Nicholls 3

The Wildcats burst out of the gate with a 22 point opening quarter and never slowed down, tallying 559 yards of total offense and scoring at least two touchdowns in each quarter in the second-highest scoring output for the conference this week. Avery Johnson accounted for four touchdowns in the first half as nine different players scored a touchdown for Kansas State.

Arizona 35 | Northern Arizona 7

Hopes of a repeat of 2021's upset win were dashed early as Arizona kept the Lumberjacks off the scoreboard until the 4th quarter. Northern Arizona's only score of the day came on defense when Noble Young-Blackgoat took Sawyer Anderson's pass attempt 36 yards to the house.
